The Jewish citizens of Vilkaviskis saw themselves as both Jewish and proud Lithuanians. They took their responsibilites as citizens of tjhe new Lithuanian state very seriously and as such their enrolement in the new Lithuanian army.
The Oath of Alligance to the Lithuanian State was required to be taken in a religious institution - these pictures shows the Jewish soldiers of Vilkaviskis. Its sad to think that so many of these patriotic Jewish citizens were to murdered in a few years - partly by their neighbours !
This is the only picture of the interior of the Great Synagogue of Vilkaviskis
Pictures of Jewish recruits after the swearing in ceremony infront of the Great Synagogue of Vilkaviskis
